How to Replace Batteries in a Spy Pen

How to Replace Batteries in a Spy Pen

As the name suggests, the Spy Pen is a must-have tool for any aspiring spy. This battery-operated device looks like a pen, but has other features such as a built-in alarm, telescope and flashlight. Like any other battery-operated device, the power will drain with regular use. Fortunately, the Spy Pen was designed to be sturdy, but easy to use, so the batteries can be removed with little difficulty.

Instructions
1
Remove the screw from the pen with a screwdriver. The screw is located just beneath the rubber grip pad.

2
Grasp the rubber grip with one hand and the tip of the pen with your other hand. Twist your hands in opposite directions to remove the tip.

3.Flip the pen upside down to remove the old batteries.

4
Put the replacement batteries in the pen. The positive ends of the batteries should go in first.

5
Twist the pen cap back on the pen body and secure it in place with the screw.

How to Check a Room for Spy Devices

How to Check a Room for Spy Devices

Just when you think spies and spy gadgets are a thing of fiction, surveillance technology invades your life in the form of cameras and listening devices in the most unexpected places. According to Bloomberg Businessweek in the article, "The State of Surveillance," Great Britain alone boasts four million surveillance cameras filming activities in parks, streets and government offices. If you believe you may be the target of hidden spy devices, there are ways to check the room in question without hiring expensive professional services.

Instructions

    Manually Search the Room
        1

Unplug or disconnect all electrical items. Turn off any cell phones and wireless appliances, including your Internet connection. Turn out all of the lights to make the room as dark as possible.
        2

Look for red, green or white lights that should not be there; many spy devices feature LED lights. Turn the lights back on once your search is complete.

3.Search the ceiling along the molding, in vents and smoke detectors, inside ceiling tiles and inside light fixtures for hidden cameras or listening devices.
    4

Look behind and within the frames and glass of artwork and photographs for cameras or listening devices. Search the base, frames and internal workings of clocks.
    5

Place your palm flat against any mirrors. Mirrors can be two-way, which means that they allow someone to watch you from the other side of the wall. Look your hand's reflection. If your hand looks like it's touching your hand, the mirror is normal. If there is some distance between your hand and the reflection, the mirror may be a two-way mirror. Knock on the mirror and surrounding areas to test for hollow sounds.
    6

Look and feel around the rims of lampshades. Take apart the lamp. Inspect the inside of the lamp for hidden spy devices.
    7

Inspect any plant and flower arrangements for devices.
    8

Search the room for unknown purses, packages, gym bags, backpacks, briefcases, cell phones, appliances or laptop computers. It is very easy for someone, especially in a public building, to "forget" an appliance that is able to listen to or watch you.
    9

Feel and look beneath furniture, shelves, within books and magazines, telephones, phone jacks, electrical outlet covers, light switch plates, along floor trim, under rugs, around door and window frames, and inside decorative objects for both cameras and listening devices.
    10

Listen to the noises of the room. Any electrical humming, buzzing, clicking or whirling sounds that cannot be explained should be tracked to the source.

Checking the Room with Spy Device Detectors

    11

Purchase a counter surveillance bug detector from a private investigator supply or an online surveillance equipment store. These devices can detect wireless cameras, listening devices, wearable surveillance equipment and even appliances hard-wired into a wall. Most detectors resemble a walkie-talkie or radio with an antenna.
    12

Unplug any electrical items. Turn off cell phones and wireless appliances, including Internet connections.
    13

Hold the bug detector in your hand. Turn on the equipment.
    14

Walk around the room, starting at the door and working along the walls. Many surveillance devices communicate with another device located elsewhere with radio frequencies, which the bug detectors then note. Hard-wired surveillance appliances emit low amounts of frequencies that can also be detected.
    15

Continue inspecting the room. The detector emits an electrical warning sound, often a beep, and/or a light when a suspect object is found. The sound or light signal will increase in speed the closer you are to the hidden spy device. Most detectors detect radio frequencies to within 30 feet.

How to Hook Up a Wireless Security Camera

How to Hook Up a Wireless Security Camera

A wireless security camera can be convenient for keeping your home safe. Unlike traditional security cameras, wireless cameras don't require all the complicated wiring and installation and can be set up relatively easily. All you need is a monitor, the security camera kit (which should come with a wireless receiver) and some video cables.

Instructions
1
Mount the security camera in the location of your choice. You may need to screw it into a wall using a wall mount that typically comes in the camera kit or you can simply place it on a counter top. It all depends on where you want your camera.

2
Set up your monitoring station in a separate room, like your bedroom or an attic. The monitoring station should include your monitor and a power outlet to plug your monitor into. The range of the wireless camera will affect how far away the monitoring station can be, so check the camera's packaging for the maximum range.

3.Connect the video output of the wireless receiver to the video input of the video monitor using the RCA video cables. The cable will have a yellow head (video) and, if the camera is audio-capable, the audio cables will have a white head and a red head. The input/output jacks will be appropriately labeled.

4
Power on the monitor and set it to the appropriate video channel. The proper channel will be labeled above the video inputs on the back of the monitor and can be toggled to using the "Source," "Video" or "Input" buttons on the monitor (the exact label will depend on the manufacturer).

5
Power on the camera and the wireless receiver and then tune the wireless receiver, if necessary, to the proper frequency until the image from your security camera pops up on the monitor. The procedure for tuning the wireless receiver will vary according to manufacturer, so check your brand's instruction manual.

How to Know When the Pen Camera Is Fully Charged or Charging?

How to Know When the Pen Camera Is Fully Charged or Charging?

A pen camera can be both a fun toy to play with and a sophisticated surveillance tool to use when nothing else will work. Most pen camera models work on similar principals--they have an internal drive to store a certain amount of video. You can connect the camera to a computer using a USB cable to both download the pictures and charge your camera. But how to know when the pen camera is fully charged or not can cause confusion

Instructions
1
Turn both your camera and your computer to their on positions. The camera may be dead, or in the "off" status for this to work, but by turning it on (if it has any power left) turns the pen's indicator light on automatically--the indicator light can be found on the base of the pen, next to the on/off and reset buttons.

2
Connect your pen camera to your USB cord, and then the other end of the cord to your computer. To find the USB connection on your camera, you may have to unscrew the two halves of the pen from one another about halfway down the shaft. The USB port should be located inside.

A program will pop up on your computer screen after you've connected everything; the exact program will depend on the brand and type of pen camera that you are using. It is a transfer program, and you can transfer your data as you see fit. The important thing is that as soon as you connect the USB cable to the camera and an active computer, your pen will start charging.

3.Check the LED light to determine if the battery is fully charged or not. If it is blinking red, then that means that the pen is still charging, and should be left connected to the USB cable for longer.

4
Unplug the device from the computer once the LED light stays on and remains a constant (non-blinking) green. This means that the pen camera has fully charged, and that you can use it again.

How to Know if Someone is Spying on You With Your Webcam

How to Know if Someone is Spying on You With Your Webcam

The lawsuit against Philadelphia's Lower Merion School District, where students and parents are suing over the school's abuse of webcam technology to covertly spy on students and their families in the home has caused recipients of school-issued computers to wonder "How can you tell if someone is watching you through your webcam?" Luckily, there are ways to protect your privacy

Instructions
1
Keep your webcam covered or closed. Some built-in webcams are designed with protective covers that can be slid open or closed manually, in order to turn them off and on. Other built-in webcams are turned on with a keyboard button, which are more susceptible to hackers.

2
Unplug the webcam when you're not using it. External webcams that aren't built in can simply be unplugged when not in use.

3.Upgrade your webcam to model with an LED indicator light for when it's "in use."

4
Update your Antivirus regularly. Hackers can install codes that give them access to your webcam. It may come in the form of an email attachment, or programmed into a rogue Myspace or FaceBook app. Any download can potentially have malware, spyware or adware attached, so be sure to keep your antivirus up to date at all times.

5
Check your settings. Many school computers are networked so that administrators can access your child's computer as if it were just another folder. In fact, they can manipulate files, watch their screen to see which website they're visiting, copy passwords and other codes. If the control panel is too complicated for your understanding, ask your local computer store to take a look at the webcam settings. The only user who should have access is your child. You may even want to have it disabled.

6
Install a firewall. The school district may have one installed already, but unless you're savvy enough to check the settings to see who has access, you might just want to install your own, so you can control who has access to your webcam.

7
Check the antivirus software periodically to be sure that your kids haven't disabled it. Run weekly system scans to catch recent downloads.

8
Create another identity for your student to use if they're not showing good judgment about downloads. A user with a lower security level won't be allowed to install anything new. Be sure you're available to help them access thing with your username if necessary

Tips & Warnings
Use your own computer. "Free" isn't always a good idea.

How to Detect Hidden Cameras & Listening Devices

How to Detect Hidden Cameras & Listening Devices

As technology improves, cameras and listening devices have gotten smaller, quieter and more readily disguised. While this is great for anyone wishing to conduct surveillance, it does inhibit your ability to feel safe from prying eyes, even when no one is around. While in some cases you may be protected from hidden cameras by your jurisdiction's laws---police, for instance, cannot plant these devices without a warrant, and private citizens can often not record video or sound in a private place without the knowledge and consent of the person being recorded---knowing how to discover hidden devices can be worth more than the laws designed to protect you from them

Instructions
1
Conduct a physical search of the area, looking for any conspicuously placed objects such as stuffed animals, smoke detectors, lamps, picture frames or books. Cameras can be discovered by looking for objects that seem to be "pointed" at areas of the room in an unnatural way. Listening devices can be stashed under tables or chairs, or inside pots and vases.

2
Watch for any flashing or illuminated lights. Most cameras and listening devices include an "on" or "ready" light, and its glow will help you to find it. While these lights can often be disabled, a novice may forget, or may rely on you never searching for the planted device. Turning off the lights can help.

3.Listen for electronic noises, static, or hiss as you search the room. Though many recording devices can operate in a "stealth" mode, the clicks made by electronic devices can often not be silenced. There are probably many electronic noises that you tune out, so listen intently for anything that sounds different. An assisted hearing device, such as a hearing aid, will likely not help unless you normally wear one, as it is hard to distinguish a foreign object's sound from the noise the hearing aid itself makes.

4
Shine a flashlight at various parts of the room, especially onto reflective surfaces. Surveillance devices can be hidden behind mirrors or other types of glass that effectively mask whatever is behind it under normal lighting conditions, but reveal anything if light is shone directly on it. You may also be able to catch a reflection from a hidden camera's lens. A flashlight will also assist with your physical search by narrowing the amount of space your eye is searching, and will allow you to focus on anything out of place.

5
Use a Radio Frequency (RF) signal detector to help with your search. These handheld units can identify the radio frequencies that recording devices use, and assist in locating them. While a signal detector will not tell you precisely where a hidden camera is, it will warn you as you get progressively closer to its source, helping you to find it much faster
